Havening Techniques®
Havening Techniques®
What is Havening?
Havening Techniques® is a gentle, scientifically based method developed by Dr. Ronald Ruden, MD, PhD, a New York–based physician and neuroscientist. It is designed to help reduce stress, release trauma, and create a sense of safety and calm.
The process works by combining soothing touch with focused attention and visualization, which helps the brain shift into a relaxed state and “re-code” how distressing memories and feelings are stored. The word “Havening” comes from the idea of creating a safe haven in both mind and body.
How Does It Work?
When we experience trauma or prolonged stress, the brain can become “wired” to respond with anxiety, fear, or unwanted habits—even long after the event has passed. Havening uses gentle touch on the arms, hands, and face, alongside simple mental exercises, to generate calming delta brain waves. This process helps:
Reduce the emotional charge of difficult memories
Calm the body’s stress response
Build new, positive emotional states
Promote resilience and wellbeing
What Can Havening Help With?
Many people find Havening Techniques® helpful for:
Stress, overwhelm, and burnout
Anxiety, panic, and phobias
Traumatic or distressing memories
Low self-esteem and negative thinking patterns
Grief and loss
Unwanted habits or cravings
Building confidence, focus, and emotional resilience
Supporting relaxation and better sleep
A Gentle and Empowering Approach
Havening is not about reliving past pain—it’s about gently freeing yourself from it. Sessions are client-led, safe, and empowering. The techniques can be used both in session with a practitioner and as self-care tools you can take into daily life.
